Part 4: A Lovely Loop Finale: Uncover the Beauty of Ōkōchi Sansō|大河内山荘

Updated: Dec 30, 2024

Having spent years exploring Kyoto, with its plethora of temples, shrines, gardens, and hidden treasures, we can confidently say that Ōkōchi Sanso is among the most beautiful places in the city. Late afternoon is the ideal time to visit, as the sun casts long shadows across the mossy lawns and traditional architecture, wrapping the scene in a peaceful, golden glow. This tranquil moment reveals an even deeper beauty to the garden's design, though Ōkōchi Sansō offers its stunning views and serene atmosphere at any time of day.

Ōkōchi Sanso is nestled within the Arashiyama bamboo forest in northwest Kyoto, accessible through a discreet gate. Unlike the often-crowded bamboo grove, Ōkōchi Sanso sees fewer visitors, especially in the late afternoon when the crowds have moved on to other pursuits.

Originally the home of Japanese actor Denjirō Ōkōchi (1898-1962), famous for his roles in Jidaigeki period films, the gardens and several buildings were opened to the public after his death. For an entry fee of ¥1,000, which includes a cup of traditional matcha tea and a small cake, you can explore the villa grounds spanning five acres. These grounds are filled with stunning gardens and impressive architecture, including the villa’s Japanese house, tea rooms, and a couple of Shinto shrines.

The winding paths and cobblestone steps guide you through the garden, designed to showcase every season. Located on the slopes of Mount Ogura, the garden offers breathtaking views of surrounding mountains and a panorama of Kyoto City below. The garden is meticulously maintained, with almost as many staff as visitors, and the one-way walking route is easy to follow thanks to frequent arrow signs.

Towards the end of the pathway, you’ll find a tranquil teahouse where you can enjoy your tea and sweet. Depending on your seating direction, you’ll either view the Japanese house and garden or gaze down through the bamboo trees.

In autumn, from September to November, the garden transforms with striking shades of red leaves, making it an especially beautiful time to visit.

Fans of the samurai film genre will appreciate the Ōkōchi Denjirō Museum, an open-air museum dedicated to the villa’s original owner and Jidaigeki actor. A period actor from the film "The Tale of Genji", he was part of the golden era of Japanese Film.  The museum features photographs, poster art, and videos about Denjirō's life and work. Enthusiasts of the chanbara sword-fighting film genre (stories about samurai warriors, sword fights, and historical settings) will enjoy this tribute to an early star.
